textwidget\">\n\t<p>Cambodia:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A small country in Southeast Asia, area 181,035 km\u00b2, population nearly 18 million.<\/li>\n<li>One of the poorest countries in Asia.<\/li>\n<li>Ravaged by decades of civil war.<\/li>\n<li>A quarter of the population was wiped out in the 1970s as a result of the policies of an extreme communist regime.<\/li>\n<li>Origin of the term <em>killing fields<\/em>, where innocent men, women and children were beaten to death.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Many countries went through tragic upheavals in the latter part of the 20th century, but the story of Cambodia must rank among the most harrowing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A country with no inhabited towns, no personal possessions, no money, no schools, no health care, no religion, no trust, no hope.<\/li>\n<li>A country where enemies of \"the organisation\" were betrayed and exterminated, where parents witnessed their babies being battered to death, where the condemned had to dig their own graves.<\/li>\n<li>A country where at least 1.7 million people died in four years as a result of starvation, disease and execution.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div traumatic past. Yet the country still suffers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A third of the population\u00a0are in multidimensional poverty (household deprivation in education, health and living standards).<\/li>\n<li>Many children leave school before they reach the age of 15.<\/li>\n<li>A culture of impunity and corruption denies justice to the poor and oppressed.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The concept of community was lost during Cambodia's tragic upheaval in the 1970s and the effects are still felt today:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Betrayal, often by friends or relatives and even by children, has left many unable to trust.<\/li>\n<li>Recovery of former, highly held values, such as the responsibility of grown-up children to care for elderly parents, has been slow.<\/li>\n<li>Religious beliefs were repressed, believers persecuted or executed, and places of worship destroyed or desecrated by a brutal communist regime.<\/li>\n<li>Poverty and the desperate need to survive have fuelled corruption.<\/li>\n<li>The gap between the very rich and the very poor becomes ever wider.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-1122-2-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">Out of Crisis...<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>Crisis: <em>an unstable situation of extreme danger or difficulty<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Cambodia's recovery from the effects of war, genocide and the virtual elimination of its skilled workforce has been slow and beset by setbacks:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For more than a decade Cambodia was refused development assistance by western governments.<\/li>\n<li>Nearly 20 years of insurgence soaked up scarce resources and hindered recovery.<\/li>\n<li>The rural poor have suffered as a result of floods, drought and deforestation.<\/li>\n<li>Cambodia is not expected to be clear of landmines until at least 2030.<\/li>\n<li>In 2025, fighting erupted twice between Cambodian and Thai troops along the border and further into Cambodia, resulting in the deaths and large-scale displacement of civilians.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-1122-3-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-1122-3-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-image panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"10\" ><div of Crisis (CCC) <a href=\"http:\/\/cambcomm.org.uk\/ccc\/the-story-of-ccc\/\">was born<\/a> out of one man's compassion for the people of Cambodia. We are a Christian organisation, working in partnership with the growing <a href=\"http:\/\/cambcomm.org.uk\/ccc\/the-christian-church-in-cambodia\/\">Christian church<\/a> in Cambodia, but aiming to provide humanitarian assistance to people of all religions in that country, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/cambcomm.org.uk\/ccc\/widows-orphans-and-the-poor-2\/\">widows, orphans and the very poor<\/a>. We are involved in education, supporting an <a href=\"https:\/\/cambcomm.org.uk\/ccc\/timothy-school-and-sports-ministry\/\">informal village school<\/a>. CCC's vision is for the establishment of a Christian <a href=\"http:\/\/cambcomm.org.uk\/ccc\/timothy-college-and-business-institute\/\">college and business institute<\/a> in Cambodia.
